How to: Create a Buddha Bowl

A buddha bowl is basically a bowl with an assortment of small portions of different foods (especially veggies). Some say the concept is thought to emulate the way Buddhist monks would walk around with a bowl, accepting small portions from other people.

The basics of a buddha bowl are that it should contain the following:

Green base: Anything green and leafy e.g. baby spinach, kale, rocket, mixed leaves, broccoli.

More veggies: Chopped, grated, cooked or raw - it is a good way to use up leftovers. Texture is as important in a Buddha Bowl as taste so be sure to include a crunchy option to keep things interesting.

Protein: Palm size portion of quality vegetable or animal protein.

Starchy carbs or pseudo grains: A small amount of sweet potatoes or quinoa keeps you on plan. You can add bulgur wheat, barley, or wild rice if you need some variety.

Finishing flavour - Sauce, dressing and sprinkling of fresh herbs. Pomegranate seeds, avocado chunks or some nuts and seeds can be considered a finishing touch too.

You can buy pre-cooked grains to make this even easier to prepare or just cook a batch of quinoa or roasted sweet potato cubes at the start of the week and add different protein, veggies and sauce to create different lunches.

Enjoy!
